PARIS, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- France says its commandos killed a Somali pirate during an assault to free two mariners held aboard a yacht off the African coast.
The successful mission came amid a surge in piracy in the Gulf of Aden and new steps by the European Union to combat the problem.
"France will not allow crime to pay," French President Nicholas Sarkozy said in announcing the rescue, which also resulted in the arrest of six alleged pirates. "This operation is a warning to all those who engage in criminal activity."
The Daily Telegraph said Tuesday that the EU announced on the previous day that it was establishing a special unit to coordinate anti-piracy efforts off Somalia.
On the same day, however, it was reported that pirates had captured a chemical tanker and were holding its 22-member crew captive.
