Three die in Afghan motorcycle bombing

HERAT, Afghanistan, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Three people died in an Afghanistan motorcycle bomb blast targeting a district police chief in the western province of Herat, officials said Monday.

The chief, Lal Mohammad Umarzai of the Shindand district, survived the attack, but his son and two bodyguards were killed, the Kuwait news agency KUNA reported.

Umarzai said his two-vehicle convoy was hit by a bomb fitted on a motorcycle parked along the road. KUNA said no one had claimed responsibility for the blast.

The scene of the attack was near the village of Azizabad, where the Afghan government and U.N. investigators say 90 civilians were killed in an Aug. 22 U.S. bombing. U.S. military officials say only a few civilians died in the raid.

On Saturday, an Afghan provincial governor was killed in a land mine explosion in the Paghman district north of Kabul, KUNA said.
