CHICAGO, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A city worker in Chicago was shot Monday while placing a boot on a vehicle on the South Side, police said.

After being shot in the back, the Department of Revenue worker was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and was in stable condition, The Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

The 35-year-old revenue worker was booting the car when a man who claimed to be the owner allegedly attacked him with a stick, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

After they "exchanged words," the alleged attacker ran down an alley, but then he re-emerged with a gun and shot at the worker, Bond said.

The gunman then fled the scene, the newspaper reported.
