TAIPEI, Taiwan, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Typhoon Sinlaku injured 13 people and caused widespread power outages Sunday after making landfall in Taiwan, officials said.

Sinlaku, packing 100 mph winds, came ashore early Sunday morning in Yilan County, Taiwan, knocking out power to 130,000 households and sending 782 refugees into public shelters, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

In mainland China, officials in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces evacuated more than 170,000 people from low-lying coastal regions as the typhoon approached.

The coming of Sinlaku triggered a rare meteorological event known as the foehn phenomenon, wherein warm, dry winds swept through Taiwan's Taitung County, Xinhua said.
