KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A suicide bombing in southern Afghanistan Sunday morning killed two doctors and their driver, and injured 16 others, officials said.

United Nationals officials said the doctors were working for the World Health Organization to vaccinate Kandahar province residents against polio when they were killed in a suicide attack claimed by the Taliban, KUNA, the Kuwait news agency, reported.

Afghan officials said the attack happened in the border town of Spin Boldak.

The U.N. assistance mission in Afghanistan issued a statement saying the attack was carried out on innocent civilians working for the Afghan people "and is beyond comprehension."

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi told KUNA the attack was carried out by a local member.
