SKOVDE, Sweden, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Rail officials in Sweden say a test crew traveling 188 miles per hour set a speed record for a train on a Swedish railway.

The previous record of 183 mph was broken Saturday in a trial run of a Regina train between Skovde and Toreboda in western Sweden, reported TT, the Swedish news agency.

The high-speed tests are part of a research project between the railway authority Banverket and train maker Bombardier Transportation, based in Berlin.

The highest speed permitted for regular train travel in Sweden is 124 mph, TT reported.
