Zuma corruption case dismissed

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A judge Friday dismissed the corruption case against Jacob Zuma, the African National Congress leader who says he'll run for president of South Africa.

The allegations against Zuma, whose campaign trademark is Bring Me My Machine Gun, dated to a weapons deal in the late 1990s. Prosecutors alleged Zuma accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the French arms company Thint, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

After years of legal wrangling, the case against Zuma was dismissed on a technicality when Judge Chris Nicholson, of the Pietermaritzburg High Court, found prosecutors failed to give Zuma the opportunity last December to present arguments as to why he shouldn't be charged, Britain's Telegraph reported Friday.

If prosecutors appeal Nicholson's ruling, the legal process likely would drag on far beyond next year's presidential election, which Zuma is favored to win, AllAfrica.com reported.
