Report: Mugabe agrees to share power

HARARE, Zimbabwe, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe reportedly has agreed to a power-sharing agreement naming opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai prime minister.

South African President Thabo Mbeki, who had been mediating talks between Mugabe and Tsvangirai, said the two rivals Thursday night unanimously endorsed a final pact that is to be unveiled to the public on Monday, The Times of London reported.

The power-sharing pact could end Mugabe's 28-year monopoly on power and the political crisis triggered by contested presidential elections earlier this year, The Herald in Zimbabwe reported Friday.

Leaders of Tsvangirai's party, the Movement for Democratic Change, said the Zimbabwean Parliament will be asked to amend the Constitution to establish an inclusive government, the Herald said, adding many still doubt Mugabe will loosen his grip and actually let rivals share in decision-making.
