Policeman injures arm saving kitten

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A Florida sheriff's deputy suffered a crushing injury to his arm after rescuing a small gray kitten that had fallen into a storm drain in the town of Dunedin.

Patrol Officer Christopher White, 36, of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office had pulled the kitten out of the storm drain and was trying to replace the heavy metal grate when it fell on his arm, the St. Petersburg, Fla., Times reports.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says it took two deputies to lift the grate and free White so paramedics could take him to the hospital.

The kitten was the last of six in a litter belonging to a local family. It had escaped during the night Monday and fallen into the storm drain.

A school crossing guard heard it crying Tuesday morning and called police.
