Missouri lawmaker quits to fight charges

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A Republican state legislator charged with sexually assaulting a teenager has resigned his seat in the Missouri House of Representatives.

State Rep. Scott Muschany, R-Frontenac, entered a plea of innocent to deviate sexual intercourse Tuesday during an appearance in Cole County Circuit Court, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Muschany, 42, allegedly assaulted the 14-year-old at her mother's house in May. The mother is a former employee of the Missouri House of Representatives.

Muschany announced earlier this year that he was leaving the legislature to spend more time with his wife and children but he had earlier said he wouldn't resign, the Post-Dispatch said.

Immediately after the hearing, he sent a letter of resignation to the Missouri House speaker, his lawyer, Robert Haar of St. Louis told the newspaper. Haar said that Muschany decided to focus on putting together his defense because there will be little legislative work before the election.
