Infant death suspect allowed $75,000 bail

COLUMBIA, S.C., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A South Carolina day-care center operator suspected of killing three infants can post $75,000 bail for her freedom, a judge ruled.

Circuit Court Judge Alison Lee said that Andrea Person, who has been waiting in jail for 17 months for her trial to begin, received a bail lower than prosecutors requested since she was not a public threat, The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., said Wednesday.

"She's not a danger to the community at large," Lee said in Tuesday's ruling.

While Person wasn't initially charged in relation to the deaths of 1-year-old Zachary Ulengchong in 1998 and 4-month-old Elijah Brown in 2001 at her home day-care center, a 2007 incident drew the attention of authorities.

The State said following the suffocation death of 2-year-old Michael Walker while in Person's care in April 2007, the two prior incidents were investigated again and charges were filed against her.
