PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- At least 60 people were killed in Haiti when Hurricane Ike passed over the Caribbean nation, Haitian radio reported Tuesday.

The death toll is likely to mount, however, as residents of Haiti's larger cities clear debris from homes and buildings inundated with murky water.

Hundreds of Haitians were killed when Hurricane Hannah passed over the island nation last week.

Relief officials said some 600,000 people lost their homes or had homes suffering major damage.
