British prosecutors mull terrorist retrial

LONDON, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A British jury was unable to decide whether a group of British Muslims was part of a plot to detonate bombs aboard trans-Atlantic flights, court officials said.

While three men were convicted Monday of conspiracy to murder, the jury was deadlocked on whether the defendants planned to use liquid bombs to blow up planes flying from London Heathrow Airport to cities in the United States and Canada, The Times of London reported Tuesday.

Prosecutors indicated they likely would seek to retry seven men to prove that there was a plan to attack international flights and kill thousands of people, the newspaper said.

Three of the eight defendants were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Jurors didn't reach verdict on terrorist charges against four other men, who recorded "martyr" videos and admitted to charges of conspiring to cause a public nuisance, the newspaper said.

Another defendant was acquitted of all charges and cannot be retried.
