WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Aides to U.S. Senate Democratic leaders say Sen. Joe Lieberman's Republican convention speech could cost him his Homeland Security Committee chairmanship.
Lieberman took Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to task while on stage during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Unclear is how Democrats will retaliate by no longer permitting Lieberman to caucus with them or stripping him of is chairmanship, Politico reported.
The 66-year-old Connecticut independent has said he hoped to stay in the Democratic fold, but people close to him told Politico that Lieberman was becoming more pessimistic about that prospect.
When he returned to Washington Monday, Lieberman was hit by the resignation of his legislative director, Joe Goffman, the Washington publication said. In a letter to colleagues, Goffman offered no reason.
While Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada publicly has a wait-and-see attitude regarding Lieberman, he reportedly told associates Lieberman will lose his post "if we hit 55 or 56" seats, a gain of four or five seats in November, the person added.
