KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A solemn sunset ramp ceremony Monday was held in Afghanistan for Canadian Sgt. Scott Shipway, killed in a roadside bomb attack.
Coalition soldiers lined the Kandahar Airfield tarmac to salute the infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba, who was remembered for his motto "never let a comrade down," the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
His remains were then carried onto a plane to be flown back to Canada.
Shipway -- the 97th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan since Canada first sent troops there in 2002 -- was killed Sunday when his armored vehicle hit an improvised explosive device during a security patrol outside Kandahar city. Seven other Canadian soldiers were injured, NATO said.
He was on his second Afghan tour of duty and was due to return home to his wife, Deanna, 6-year-old son Hayden and 4-year-old daughter Rowan Wednesday, the CBC said.
During his first tour in 2006, he was injured and cited for his excellent care of a wounded comrade during another roadside bomb attack.
"He disregarded the danger to himself ... and began treating the casualties, including one who had lost both of his legs," said Brig. Gen. Denis Thompson, the top Canadian commander in Afghanistan.
"Using a radio, he got direction from the chief surgeon and was able to stop the bleeding, thereby saving that soldier's life," Thompson said.
