Microwave mom's attorneys say judge erred

DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Attorneys for an Ohio woman convicted of killing her baby in a microwave oven say they want an investigation of alleged official misconduct in the case.

China Arnold, 28, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole by a Montgomery County, Ohio, judge Monday. Before the sentencing, Arnold's attorneys said a key prosecution witness alleged she was assaulted by a prosecutor's investigator and was pressured into giving false testimony, the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported.

Arnold's attorneys filed a 46-page memorandum with Common Pleas Court Judge Mary Wiseman contending there were other problems with her trial, as well.

They allege Arnold's fellow jail inmate, Kyra Wood, wasn't allowed to testify during the trial that Arnold told her she didn't know who killed the baby; and they faulted Wiseman for refusing to call as a witness a boy that defense attorneys identified as the baby's real killer.
