Teachers, doctors strike in Gaza

GAZA, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Teachers and doctors affiliated with Islamic Jihad have been on strike in Gaza, claiming Hamas has brought politics into schools and hospitals.

Hamas security forces broke up a demonstration Saturday by striking teachers, Ynetnews reported.

The Israeli news agency said Hamas has been able to find teachers to fill the places of the strikers but has had more trouble replacing striking doctors. Hamas claims at least five people have died since the strike started because of lack of treatment.

The Palestinian Authority has said teachers who do not strike will not be paid. The authority, dominated by Fatah, controls the West Bank but has lost control of Gaza to Hamas.
