Lt. Eduardo Ojeda of the state Human Services Police Department said while the unidentified woman has been held at Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital in Hunterdon County, N.J., for 14 years, her newly diagnosed condition has given officials a sense of urgency, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Sunday.
"Every human being is entitled to the minimal dignity of dying at least with their name," Ojeda said. "This lady is a human being. I am sure she has some family member out there or friends who never knew what happened or what became of her."
The woman was found wandering through the Woodbridge Center mall on Nov. 2, 1994. The Star-Ledger said she appeared to be in her mid-50s, was found with no identification and she told authorities in Spanish she had no memory of her identity or her home.
The newspaper said as part of the renewed identification effort, state officials are giving media outlets photographs of the woman and contacting government officials in Latin American countries.
