Boston airport to unveil Sept. 11 memorial

BOSTON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Port Authority officials say the scheduled unveiling of a Sept. 11 memorial in Boston's Logan International Airport should serve as a reminder.

Authority Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Kinton Jr. said the $3.5 million Airport 9/11 Memorial should remind travelers the Boston airport was the site where two of the hijacked Sept. 11 jets began their fateful journeys, The Boston Globe reported Sunday.

"This happened not because anyone failed to do their jobs that day, but because (the terrorists) figured out how to beat the system," Kinton said.

"It changed the lives of all of us. This isn't ground zero, but it certainly was the launching point."

The memorial, which consists of several trees and a translucent green-glass cube, will be unveiled Tuesday during the seventh anniversary of day 10 terrorists took the two planes hostage.

The Globe said the cube will feature the names of the 148 innocent passengers who boarded American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 at the Boston airport on that fateful day.
