WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A 27-year-old Virginia man was in jail Saturday after he was arrested near the U.S. Capitol for allegedly carrying an assault rifle and a grenade is his SUV.
U.S. Capitol Police said they arrested Christopher Timmons of Orange, Va., Friday morning after he allegedly drove up to an officer to ask directions, the Washington Post reported. Police say the officer spotted a rifle case in Timmons' Jeep Cherokee and ordered him out of the vehicle.
Authorities said a subsequent search turned up an AK-47 assault rifle, a grenade, a pistol, ammunition, loaded magazines "and several other items of concern to the police," CNN said.
Timmons' intentions were not immediately known. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Virginia authorities told CNN that Timmons was convicted of that same charge last March in Albemarle County, Va., and served a month in jail.
Two grenades were found in Timmons' car in that incident, Albemarle Police Chief John Miller said.
