Kath Kelly, 47, has written a book on her experiences that began a year ago when she was concerned about affording a wedding present for her brother and fiancee, The Times of London reported Saturday.
Kelly acknowledges her pound-a-day rule did not include her rent of a room in a shared house or utility bills, which were all paid in advance. But she did cover everything else --- including clothing, food and toiletries -- through a variety of techniques. Only once, when she had to visit a dentist, did she go over budget.
After a year of living frugally, Kelly was able to save enough to buy her brother and his new wife a nice gift, as well as contributing to the cost of their wedding reception. She even found her own love, meeting her boyfriend while volunteering at an organic farm.
"Before, I enjoyed spending money as much as anyone, but now I don't see the need for expensive things. I still live very frugally and don't spend much at all, though it is probably more than one pound a day," said Kelly.
