MIAMI, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Josephine was losing its strength Friday as it moved along the Atlantic west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands, forecasters in Miami said.

Josephine is moving in a northwesterly direction at 8 mph and was expected to continue on this path for the next few days, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. EDT advisory.

The storm's maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph, and the storm was expected to slowly weaken during the next 24 hours, the center said.

Tropical storm force winds extended outward up to 105 miles from Josephine's center, the hurricane center said.
