Fiery meteorite wows Western Canada
Police closed streets in downtown Wheaton and shut down commuter rail traffic, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The man invaded the Wheaton Bank & Trust at around 1:30 p.m.
Deputy Police Chief Thomas Meloni said the man may have called in a false report of a traffic crash to lure an officer to the scene. The officer was stabbed in the arm, suffering minor injuries.
Meloni said negotiators convinced the man to allow most of the hostages to leave the bank. There were an estimated 10 hostages at one point, and two were still inside at about 4:15 p.m. when police officers heard a shot.
A SWAT team found the hostage-taker dead with a single wound in his head. His identity had not been released Friday evening pending notification of relatives.
