DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal reportedly is relocating from Syria to Sudan, a move seen as enhancing Syria's quest for peace with Israel.

Unnamed Palestinian sources told the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai Syrian authorities had worked out the deal with Meshal in secret. Meshal had lived in Damascus for about a decade since being expelled from Jordan.

If true, Israeli sources believe the move signals a serious desire on Syria's part to advance the negotiations.

However, Hamas denied the report, Haaretz reported Tuesday. A Hamas official in Damascus, speaking on condition of anonymity, labeled the media reports as "false."
