STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A survey indicates that violent neo-Nazi groups are on the increase in Sweden, anti-racism activists say.
The Expo Foundation says its figures show that 17 new neo-Nazi groups have sprung up in Sweden in the past two years, bringing the total to around 30, the Swedish news agency TT reported Tuesday.
The group found the highest concentration of racist cells to be in middle and southern sections of Sweden, and while most claim to be independent some reportedly have ties to more established organizations, such as Info-14 and the Nordic Union.
The security police service Sapo says it is aware of the increase in neo-Nazis, but restricts itself to those that commit violent acts.
"We are primarily interested in the criminal manifestations and thus we're talking about a handful of groups," Sapo analyst Ahn-Za Hagstrom told the Expo Foundation's Internet newsletter.
