LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Relatives of one-time Louisville homicide suspect Michael Ignatow said he made no effort to call for help as he bled to death during the weekend.

Ignatow, 70, apparently fell through a glass coffee table and died after stumbling from room to room in his apartment. Nearly two decades ago he was acquitted of killing his girlfriend after torturing her on a different glass coffee table.

"It's kind of bitterly ironic in a way that a glass table was a part of his death," said retired Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal columnist Bob Hill, who wrote a book about the crime.

Ignatow was acquitted in 1991 of murdering Brenda Sue Schaeffer, but a year later a roll of undeveloped film with images of him sexually abusing the victim on the night of her death were discovered in the heating duct of a home he once owned.

Ignatow, who became a born-again Christian after his acquittal, served five years in prison for perjury.

He was in failing health at the time of his death and had become prone to falls, the Courier-Journal said Tuesday.

"He was lonely, depressed about his health," said his son, Michael. "Ultimately, he was ready to go."
