KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Military officials say a sailor from Lexington, N.C., was the 500th U.S. service member killed in Afghanistan since the war's start in 2001.
U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Joshua Harris, 36, died Saturday, CNN reported Tuesday. Harris was one of 22 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in August.
In June, 28 U.S. service members died in Afghanistan -- the U.S. military's highest number of casualties there in one month, CNN reported.
Since the start of the war, 940 U.S.-led coalition troops have died in Afghanistan, including Americans.
