Sources: Daughter suspect in mom's death

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A 76-year-old former mayoral candidate in North Haven, N.Y., is a suspect in the shooting death of her 100-year-old mother, sources say.

Unidentified sources said police are questioning former corrections officer Jean Burke, who once ran for town mayor, after the discovery of Jessie Burke's body during the weekend, the New York Post reported Monday.

The sources quoted the younger Burke as saying she was "in a daze" as police took her away from the scene of the suspected homicide Sunday.

"I'm in a daze," Burke said according to the sources. "I'm in a daze right now. I'm in a daze about what's being said."

Newsday said police were called to the victim's home by Burke and responding officers found her mother dead with a bullet wound to the head.

The newspaper said the case is being investigated as a potential homicide by Suffolk County detectives.
