WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee, said Monday her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant and plans to marry the father.
Politico reported that Palin, who was named as Republican presidential hopeful John McCain's VP pick Friday, said in a statement with her husband Todd that their daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and plans to keep the baby.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned," the Palins said in a statement. "As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."
McCain's selection of Palin has been widely praised by conservatives because of her strong anti-abortion stance.
"We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," the family statement said.
