KILINOCHCHI, Sri Lanka, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Sri Lankan rebels say the country's military is responsible for the deaths of five civilians at a refugee camp in the northern town of Kilinochchi.
In a statement released Sunday, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, LTTE, said a government-fired artillery shell landed among temporary shelters set up in a rebel-held area, killing five, including two small children, the BBC reported.
The accusation comes one day after a bomb hidden in a fruit cart exploded in a busy Colombo commercial district, killing 43 people. The Sri Lankan government accused the LTTE of orchestrating the terror attack.
A military spokesman told the BBC the Tigers' accusation of shelling a refugee camp was false, adding that military operations in the rebel-controlled north had targeted only the LTTE's defenses and not civilians.
