A plea agreement Friday reduced charges from felony to misdemeanor level defacement of property for all five young people who disrupted a March 23 service at Holy Name Cathedral, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday. A sixth protester received the same sentence earlier.
Cook County Judge James B. Linn described the protesters as "young people that have very strong beliefs and great enthusiasm about their beliefs." But he also scolded them as being "very naive" and added that "I find it ironic that in this case that the target you picked out, the people you were disturbing on perhaps their holiest day, trying to express their beliefs, literally trying to communicate with God -- I would guess that the majority of those people were probably of the same mind as you about the Iraq war."
After the sentencing, Ryne Ziemba, 25, Donte Smith, 22, Regan Maher, 25, Mercedes Phinaih, 19, and Ephran Ramirez, 22, took turns reading a statement about their protest.
