LAS VEGAS, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A distant cousin of the late rock 'n' roll singer Elvis Presley admitted in a Las Vegas court that he ran over and killed a man with whom he had fought.
U.S. District Judge David Barker responded to Kristopher Presley's guilty plea to an involuntary manslaughter charge by sentencing him to 18 months to four years in prison. Presley has already spent more than 1,100 days in jail for the 2004 incident, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Saturday.
The time served by the Clark County Detention Center inmate while awaiting his trial date means Presley could potentially be freed in the near future on time served, the newspaper said.
Presley expressed regret to Barker for the 2004 death of Martin Diaz-Barboza, who Presley ran over with his car shortly after the two had been in a brawl.
Presley claimed the incident was an act of self-defense and his attorney, Greg Denue, said the aspiring hip-hop artist wants to move on with his life after his release.
"He's tried to get on with his life," Denue told the Review-Journal. "With his music career, he has a very bright future."
