Baby cut from mom's womb home with dad

PASCO, Wash., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A baby born prematurely when he was cut from his mother's womb is home with his father and siblings in Washington state.

Salvador Campos spent weeks in a Spokane hospital after his mother was killed June 27. Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong of Kennewick, Wash., has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing Araceli Gomez to get her baby.

The baby has suffered brain damage because of his premature birth and because he did not see a doctor during the first hours outside his mother's womb, although the extent of the damage cannot be determined until he is older, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. His father, Juan Felipe Campos Gomez, said he has been told his son suffered loss of oxygen during those critical hours.

Campos said he is happy to have Salvador join his older brother, Juan, 10, and sister, Brenda, 2.

"That's the best thing that's happened to me -- that he's with me," Campos told the newspaper, speaking through an interpreter. "The best thing that could've happened was that the baby survived."
