NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A 19-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark Thursday morning at a beach on the northeast coast of Florida.

The surfer, a New Smyrna Beach resident whose name was not released, was the 19th person bitten in Volusia County so far this year and the second in two days, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

"He was bitten in the left foot and it was a superficial injury," Scott Petersohn of the Volusia County Beach Patrol said.

He left with a friend after getting treatment for his injury on the beach.

On Wednesday, a 26-year-old was attacked, receiving a bite on his left leg, while sitting on a surfboard in murky water. The two attacks took place in the same area.

In 2001, Volusia County reported a record number of shark bites, 22.
