Johan van der Kamp, German Agro Action regional director, said the decision to end the group's Darfur mission was made due to ongoing attacks on humanitarian staff and supply trucks throughout the war-torn region, Deutsche Welle said Thursday.
"The risk to our staff is simply too high," van der Kamp said in a statement.
"Five weeks ago, relief organizations were not a target of attacks in this area. Now things have changed," he added.
The end of German aid to the region is the second time the group has suspended deliveries in Darfur, van der Kamp told Deutsche Welle. He said his group previously halted emergency food shipments due to regional violence, before eventually resuming efforts in smaller communities.
The German broadcaster reported that the aid suspension comes months after the U.N. World Food Program announced 50 percent of all aid shipments to Darfur had been stopped due to convoy attacks.
