KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Authorities say a Japanese aid worker kidnapped in Afghanistan was shot to death and his body found Wednesday.

Kazuya Ito, 31, was dragged from his car Tuesday in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, CNN reported.

His body was found in the same region and a member of the Taliban arrested for the kidnapping, Yeah Shukerullah Durani, a local official in Nangarhar province told CNN.

Japanese officials had yet to confirm the body's identity, said Ichita Yamamoto, vice foreign minister of Japan.

Ito worked for the Japanese group Peshawar-kai and was helping to transfer water from the Kunar River in Afghanistan.
