Lebanon issues warrant for Libya's Gaddafi

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Lebanese magistrate signed an arrest warrant for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi for his alleged role in a kidnapping 30 years ago, officials said.

Magistrate Samih al-Hajj said in his charge sheet Wednesday that Gadhafi incited the abduction of Imam Musa al-Sadr, a prominent Iranian-born Shia cleric who disappeared during a visit to Libya in 1978.

He was the founder of the Amal movement, which evolved into one of Lebanon's largest political parties.

Sadr's disappearance occurred amid a brutal civil war between Lebanon's Shia and Sunni factions. Libya has long been suspected of playing a role in the matter, according to the Lebanese news service Ya Libnan.

Gadhafi has ignored previous summons from the Lebanese courts to answer questions about Sadr.
