Indian state under curfew

BARGARH, India, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Security forces in the Indian state of Orissa said Wednesday they have been ordered to shoot violators of a new curfew imposed to stop violence.

Tensions between Hindus and Christians erupted this week when gunmen killed Hindu leader Laxmananda Saraswati and mobs retaliated by burning churches, CNN reported.

Saraswati, and four others were killed Saturday in the Kandhamal district when gunmen raided a Hindu school, CNN reported.

The killings sparked clashes in numerous villages, resulting in several more deaths, CNN reported. Five Christians were detained for questioning, though authorities have not determined who shot Saraswati and the four others, CNN reported.
