IVREA, Italy, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Franciscan friar in Italy was critically injured in an attack on his monastery in the foothills of the Alps, his superior said.
The Rev. Sergio Baldini, the night watchman at the San Colombano Belmonte monastery, was dining with three elderly friars when they were attacked by three hooded men who gagged and bound them before beating them with clubs, ANSA reported Wednesday.
The news service reported the men were allegedly after the small amount of money the friars had in their pockets.
"They set on them with mindless violence,'' said Father Gabriele Trivellin, provincial head of the Franciscan order to which the friars belong. "It was savage and gratuitous because they didn't try to resist."
Baldini, 48, is in critical condition at Turin's San Giovanni Bosco hospital. Doctors say his condition is life-threatening.
The other three friars were hospitalized with less serious injuries. Injured were the Revs. Salvatore Magliano, 86, Emanuele Battagliotti, 81, and Martino Giurini, 76.
