Village at Grand Canyon damaged by flood

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A village on the Havasupai reservation at the Grand Canyon in Arizona will be closed to tourists until damage from recent floods is repaired, the tribe said.

An e-mail went out to backpackers Monday that said facilities in Supai will reopen early next year, the Flagstaff (Ariz.) Daily Sun reported.

Supai, 8 miles from a road and home to 450 people, is reachable only by foot, mule or helicopter. Residents were evacuated Aug. 17 by helicopter and allowed to return to their homes last week.

An employee at the lodge in the village told the Sun that flooding damaged the travertine rock formation that serves as the base for four waterfalls. Water also swept away several bridges and damaged the campground.

The village endured major floods in 1990, 1993 and 1997.

Supai gets about 30,000 visitors a year.
