CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Monday the United States doesn't think Russia has been living up to its cease-fire agreement with Georgia.
At the daily White House press briefing, Fratto said there are six points to the agreement and "there's no question that … Russia remains in violation of that agreement."
Russia moved into Georgian territory, claiming Georgia was carrying out ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two breakaway territories with pro-Russian leanings. The Russian Duma was considering a resolution to recognize the territories' independence.
"We still see large numbers of Russian troops in undisputed territory. We see them maintaining checkpoints. We still see the activity in Poti," Fratto said, adding, "We continue to encourage them to live up to the commitment that their president made that they would fully withdraw and live up to the agreement."
Fratto said the United States would like to see 100 monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the area to take the place of Russian forces.
