QUEENSTON, Ontario, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A Canadian man rescued from drowning by the U.S. Coast Guard in the Niagara River is being held in Buffalo, N.Y., for entering the United States illegally.
Jason Haist, 28, was riding his Jet Ski with friends Saturday near Queenston, Ontario, near where the river empties in Lake Ontario, when he ran into trouble in the Whirlpool Rapids, the Toronto Star reported Monday.
Haist came off the machine and was rescued unconscious by the Coast Guard. He and his cousin Edward Haist were taken to Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, N.Y., where doctors suctioned Jason Haist's lungs. The cousins were then arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents, the report said.
Border Patrol agent Jason Ciliberti told the Star in a telephone interview the charges came because the cousins turned up at an unauthorized point of entry and Jason Haist wasn't carrying any identification in his wetsuit.
"They're here illegally," Ciliberti said, adding they will have to appear before a judge within three weeks to explain why they landed in the United States.
