Polls: Support low for affirmative action

DENVER, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A "misunderstanding" may be behind poll support among Colorado Democrats for a state measure that would end affirmative action programs.

Colorado Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Waak said three recent polls indicated that Colorado Democrats support the measure more than state Republicans, despite their party's long-standing support of affirmative action, The Denver Post said Monday.

Waak said the findings from the polls may be due to a "misunderstanding" on the part of Democratic respondents regarding the measure on the November election ballot that could end such state-sponsored programs.

"My guess is that if you're seeing numbers that high (among Democrats), people are misunderstanding what a 'yes' vote means, because this is the party of affirmative action," the Democratic Party official said.

An Aug. 13 poll by Rasmussen Reports indicated that 71 percent of Democratic respondents backed Amendment 46 compared with 34 percent of Republican participants.

The Post said similar findings were found in two Quinnipiac University polls, which also found that more Hispanic respondents supported the proposal than their white counterparts in the survey.
