KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Two Afghan army commanders were fired after a U.S.-led coalition airstrike killed 89 civilians, many of them children.

Commanders Jalandar Shah and Abdul Jabbar were fired by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, CNN reported Monday.

Karzai blamed Friday's casualties in the Shindand District of Herat on a failure of coordination between coalition forces and the Afghan army.

"All efforts of the Afghan government to avoid civilian casualties have not yielded any positive results, and our innocent countrymen are still killed in anti-terrorism operations," Karzai said in a statement.

Thirty Taliban insurgents, including Mullah Sadiq, a Taliban commander, were killed in Friday's ground and air raids, CNN reported.

Another 14 Afghan civilians were killed Saturday in Taliban attacks while 17 Taliban insurgents were killed by Afghan and coalition forces in southern Helman province, CNN reported.
