WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Retired U.S. Gen. Colin Powell is a possible running mate being considered by presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain, campaign advisers said.
The former secretary of state was among potential vice presidential choices McCain was considering when he indicated he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, Politico reported Sunday.
The addition of Powell to the Republican ticket would potentially add reinforcement to McCain's image as commander-in-chief, some campaign observers said.
However, former Massachusetts Gov. and McCain rival Mitt Romney remains the front-runner for the spot, Politico noted.
McCain has said he would announce his running mate Friday in Dayton, Ohio.
