GAZA, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Two "peace boats" came ashore Saturday in Gaza in a gesture of solidarity with Palestinians living under an Israeli blockade.
Some Gaza residents were disappointed after the boats arrived, Ynetnews.com reported.
"Many people thought these boats will make a significant contribution to break the siege, not only politically but also in terms of brining in goods, equipment, food, and medicine," one man told the Israeli news agency. "However, once it turned out these boats contain too little food and mostly activists ... some people left the beach disappointed."
Aryeh Mekel, an official with the Israeli Foreign Office, said the government decided to allow the boats to reach their destination to prevent "a media-covered confrontation at sea." He said Israeli officials knew who and what was on board.
The boats carried 44 people from several countries, including Israel, the United States and Tunisia, as well as one Israeli.
A Hamas member said the activists set an example for the Muslim world by being willing to risk their lives to oppose the blockade.
