TBILISI, Georgia, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Georgian officials Saturday said Russian troops have withdrawn from major portions of the country but are keeping some checkpoints running.

Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili told reporters Russian troops had relinquished control of the main east-west highway but are still manning checkpoints in the Black Sea port of Poti, which is outside of the disputed breakaway province of South Ossetia, CNN reported.

Utiashvili also said Georgian police had resumed control of the city of Gori where refugees were returning to their homes.

Meanwhile, a top Russian military official said in Moscow that Georgia wasn't done fighting.

Russian military spokesman Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn told reporters Georgian troops were stockpiling weapons for unspecified "further activities," CNN said.
