U.S. wants Syria talks stopped

JERUSALEM, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The United States is reported pressuring Turkey and Israel to halt indirect negotiations with Syria, diplomatic sources said Friday.

A newspaper report in the United Arab Emirates said the reason is a move by Syria to deploy a Russian missile system on its territory, a claim denied Friday by a senior Syrian source.

U.S. officials responded angrily to Syrian President Bashar Assad's support of Russia in its incursion into Georgia, Ynetnews reported.
