OSLO, Norway, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Many of the Norwegian aid workers who helped to identify those killed in the Asian tsunami have developed respiratory disease, medical officials said.

In Norway, about 30 percent of the more than 100 people who helped with the search and recovery effort have asthmalike symptoms, Aftenposten reported.

The tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004, originated with an underwater earthquake off Indonesia. Within hours, it killed thousands of people there and in Sri Lanka, Thailand and India.

Experts say that disinfectant sprays used on the corpses may be causing respiratory problems. Dr. Torleiv Ole Rognum, who worked in Thailand, said that the spray irritated his throat but he did not know what was in it.

At Rognum's request, a state police agency has been getting in touch with all Norwegians who worked in tsunami relief. So far, 11 of 35 report problems.
