KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Thirty militants were killed Friday in a battle between U.S.-led coalition forces and insurgents in Western Afghanistan, a coalition spokesman said.

The battle began when troops returned small-arms fire from militants in Herat province, CNN said.

Five militants were taken prisoner and a store of weapons and roadside bomb-making materials were seized, the spokesman said.
